I Will Hold On to the Word of God

Psalm 119 verse 1 says,

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the Lord (NIV).

God’s Word says that we are blessed when we walk according to God’s law. When we walk according to God’s law we are blameless in His sight.

As new covenant believers, we know that holding fast to God’s law is not about obtaining righteousness through what we do but who we believe in.

The work of the believer is to believe in the one whom God has sent. I love that Jesus highlights this as our work for we know this call to believe is not an easy one.

The older I get and the longer I walk with the Lord, the more I am crying out for the virtue of patient endurance. Oh to patiently endure in this walk of faith! What a privilege, what a gift it is to walk with Jesus day by day, step by step.

because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[b] God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.[c] And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:2-4 NIV

Through Christ, we live by the law of the Spirit that gives us life! This law, which is the fulfillment of the old testament law, frees us from the law of sin and death.

This law, the law of sin and death, was powerless because it was weakened by our flesh but when God sent His Son He condemned sin in the flesh.

I like how the Message version (MSG) puts verse 4:

The law always ended up being used as a Band-Aid on sin instead of a deep healing of it. And now what the law code asked for but we couldn’t deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us.

Verse 8 in the Message then says this:

Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased at being ignored.

In the times of great testing, I have made the mistake of focusing on my own strength and ability instead of what the Lord is speaking and His strength and ability. Oh what immaturity! I am learning day by day to trust solely in the Word of God as more source of strength for all other ground is sinking sand.

As much as I desire to please God, my desire, my hunger, my eagerness, my zeal will NEVER be enough to meet the requirements of the law. It is only a life led by the Spirit of God that can meet the requirements of God. A life driven by fear or inadequacy will never lead us to tapping into the strength of resurrcetion power. A life focused on human abilities will NEVER give us the capacity we desire to serve God the way we want. A life fixated on the flesh will never please God for the flesh profits nothing.

Oh Lord, I repent for fixing my eyes on my fears, my ability, my strength, and my own understanding.

The Word of God is my only source of strength.

The Word of God is the source of my understanding.

The Word of God, and His perspective according to His Word, is the only reality I trust.

All other ground is sinking sand; any other reality is hostile to God for it is simply an illusion.

Then I’ll never be ashamed,
for I take strength from all your commandments. Psalm 119:6 TPT

I will be faithful to all that your Word reveals—
so don’t ever give up on me! Psalm 119:8 TPT

How can a young man stay pure?
Only by living in the Word of God and walking in its truth. v9

I consider your Word to be my greatest treasure,
and I treasure it in my heart
to keep me from committing sin’s treason against you. v11

I speak continually of your laws
as I recite out loud your counsel to me. v13

I find more joy in following what you tell me to do
than in chasing after all the wealth of the world. v14

I set my heart on your precepts
and pay close attention to all your ways. v15

My delight is found in all your laws,
and I won’t forget to walk in your words. v16

Psalm 119 TPT

To hide myself in your Word is my delight for it is the end of myself and the beginning of you.

My old identity has been co-crucified with Christ and no longer lives. And now the essence of this new life is no longer mine, for the Anointed One lives his life through me—we live in union as one! My new life is empowered by the faith of the Son of God who loves me so much that he gave himself for me, dispensing his life into mine!

Galatians 2:20 TPT
